The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will host book signing event featuring Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and Coretta Scott King

Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission and The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change team up to host a historic event highlighting civil rights icons.

The Arkansas Martin Luther King, Jr. Commission will be hosting the 2022 Nonviolence Youth Summit, October 28, 2022, 10:00 AM-2:00 PM, 600 North 10th Street, Blytheville High School, Blytheville, Arkansas 72315.  The event is free and open to the public. Special guests include Dr. Bernice A. King, daughter of civil rights icons, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Coretta Scott King. Dr. King and co-author Dr. Kimberly P. Johnson, educational consultant, will sign their book, “It Starts With Me” from 11:00 AM-1:00 PM in the Chickasaw arena. Hundreds of children will receive signed copies.

“This is a historical event as it is the first time that the state has hosted several heirs of the “generals” of the civil rights movement. To see individuals such as Dr. Bernice A. King, who is one generation from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., is a once in a lifetime experience,” says DuShun Scarbrough, Executive Director.

The Commission will honor “living witnesses to history” and descendants of civil rights champions. The honorees will also interact with students in workshops prior to the ceremony. Attendees include:

Donzaleigh Abernathy, the daughter of Reverend Ralph Abernathy, a close friend and of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Sara Collins Rudolph, “The Fifth Girl,” survivor of the 16th Street Baptist Church Bombing, Birmingham, Alabama in 1963

Dr. Angela Shuttlesworth, granddaughter of Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth, who played a significant role in the civil rights movement

Mother Annie Abrams, educator, and mentor to the “Little Rock Nine”

The Integration of Blytheville High School, Commission will honor students who participated in the integration of Blytheville High School in 1970.
